Also known as: Ang II, angiotensin-2
Angiotensin II is an eight amino acid peptide, also described as an octapeptide, that comes from the precursor protein angiotensinogen. It is listed in the metabolic category on this site for research information only. In laboratory work it is widely used to explore signaling in the renin angiotensin system, especially in models involving blood vessels, the heart, the kidneys, and fibrotic tissue.

Group of peptide hormones in mammals
Angiotensin is a peptide hormone that causes vasoconstriction and an increase in blood pressure. It is part of the renin–angiotensin system, which regulates blood pressure. Angiotensin also stimulates the release of aldosterone from the adrenal cortex to promote sodium retention by the kidneys.
Angiotensin II works mainly by attaching to two receptor types, AGTR1 and AGTR2, found on target cells. Signaling through these receptors is linked to tightening of vascular smooth muscle, sympathetic influences on heart rate and contractility, and adrenal release of aldosterone, which in turn affects sodium and water handling in the kidney. Reference records also note an interaction involving the MAS1 receptor, connected in model systems to nitric oxide release from platelets.
Interest in angiotensin II grew out of work on the renin angiotensin system and its connections to blood pressure control and fluid balance. Finding its short sequence within human angiotensinogen, and later characterizing the receptors it acts on, gave researchers a defined system for experimental study. More recent work still uses angiotensin II stimulation in cell cultures and animal models to examine pathways tied to tissue injury and fibrosis.
