Also known as: β-endorphin, beta endorphin, POMC fragment
Beta-endorphin is a 31-amino-acid endogenous opioid peptide, derived from the precursor protein proopiomelanocortin (POMC), produced mainly in the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. It activates the mu-opioid receptor and is studied for its roles in pain modulation, stress response, reward, and mood regulation.

Peptide hormone in humans
β-Endorphin (beta-endorphin) is an endogenous opioid neuropeptide and peptide hormone that is produced in certain neurons within the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. It is one of three endorphins that are produced in humans, the others being α-endorphin and γ-endorphin.
Enzymatic processing of POMC releases beta-endorphin, alongside other hormones such as ACTH. Beta-endorphin binds strongly to mu-opioid receptors on neurons and immune cells. This receptor activation can reduce neuronal firing in pain pathways and modulate reward circuits, making it a focal point in research on natural pain control and stress mechanisms.
Beta-endorphin was identified in the mid-1970s during research on the brain's natural opioids following the discovery of opioid receptors and enkephalins. Its name derives from 'endogenous' and 'morphine'. A 1979 paper famously described it as 'the brain's opium'. Subsequent research, including a 1991 review, highlighted its functions in the immune system.
