Also known as: salmon calcitonin, SCT, miacalcin, CT, sCT
Calcitonin is a peptide hormone made up of 32 amino acids, presented here for research information only. Human calcitonin is cut from a larger calcitonin precursor protein, and closely related versions have been recorded in mice and rats as well. Laboratory research on this peptide focuses largely on how calcium and phosphate are handled in the body and on processes involving bone.

Peptide hormone secreted by the thyroid
Calcitonin is a hormone that triggers a short-term drop in calcium and phosphate levels in the blood. In humans, it is encoded by the gene CALCA.
Calcitonin signaling takes place through the calcitonin receptor, called CALCR, and also through a combined receptor unit that includes the protein RAMP2. Reference summaries associate its activity with a brief lowering of calcium and phosphate in the blood, connected to movement of those minerals into bone tissue. Another peptide from the same precursor, katacalcin, is also described in reference records in connection with lowering calcium in plasma.
Scientific attention to calcitonin has long centered on its hormonal role in mineral balance. Determining the human amino acid sequence and identifying its receptor system made it possible to compare the peptide across different species. Newer work places calcitonin related peptides inside wider studies of inflammation and nerve signaling that use human model systems.
