Also known as: chromogranin A fragment, CST
Catestatin is a short fragment derived from the larger protein chromogranin A. It is examined in endocrine and cardiovascular research for its influence on catecholamine release and its interactions with immune related cells. Laboratory records also note activity against selected bacteria in test systems and scavenging of free radicals in vitro.

Mammalian protein found in humans
Chromogranin-A (CgA) or parathyroid secretory protein 1 is encoded in the human by the gene CHGA. Cga is a member of the granin family of neuroendocrine secretory proteins. As such, it is located in secretory vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells such as islet beta cell secretory granules in the pancreas.
Catestatin restricts catecholamine output by acting as a noncompetitive antagonist within nicotinic cholinergic signaling. Experimental records also describe strong suppression of glucose triggered insulin release from pancreatic tissue. Other laboratory findings include effects on mast cell movement and mediator release, plus antibacterial activity against certain Gram positive and Gram negative organisms in vitro.
Catestatin was identified through work showing that a chromogranin A fragment could limit catecholamine secretion from chromaffin cells. Subsequent studies extended that interest to noradrenergic neurons, glucose prompted insulin release, and mast cell behavior. Microbial test models and questions about heart function and blood pressure regulation added further research threads.
