Also known as: GALP, galanin-like peptide
Galanin-like peptide, or GALP, is a 60 amino acid hypothalamic neuropeptide. It binds the galanin receptor family and is studied in energy balance, hormone release, and skin blood vessel responses.

Protein family
Galanin-like peptide (GALP) is a neuropeptide present in humans and other mammals. It is a 60-amino acid polypeptide produced in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary gland. It is involved in the regulation of appetite and may also have other roles such as in inflammation, sex behavior, and stress.
GALP binds the G protein coupled galanin receptors GALR1, GALR2, and GALR3 and participates in central control processes, including regulation of gonadotropin-releasing hormone release. In skin microvessels it shows vessel narrowing and anti-swelling activity that does not appear to run through GALR1 or GALR2, and laboratory work reports activity against Gram-negative bacteria through disruption of their membranes.
GALP was identified as a relative of galanin that shares its receptor family while coming from its own gene and precursor. Its presence in the hypothalamus placed it early in research on brain control of gonadotropin-releasing hormone release.
