Galanin Message-Associated Peptide

Also known as: GMAP, galanin precursor peptide

Galanin message-associated peptide, shortened to GMAP, is a 59 amino acid fragment cut from the same precursor protein that produces the neuropeptide galanin. It is studied in neuroendocrine signaling and in the biology of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Mechanism of Action

The galanin precursor system acts through three G protein coupled receptors, GALR1, GALR2, and GALR3. Signaling in this family is linked to smooth muscle contraction in the gut and urinary tract and to release of growth hormone, insulin, and adrenal signals, which is the context in which GMAP is studied.

Research History

GMAP was recognized as the companion fragment released when the galanin precursor is processed, which is how it earned the name message-associated peptide. Research on the precursor family has followed its receptors, GALR1, GALR2, and GALR3, across brain and gut tissues.
