Gastrin

Also known as: gastrin-17, gastrin-34, big gastrin

Gastrin is a stomach hormone peptide produced by G cells, best known for prompting the stomach lining to release hydrochloric acid. UniProt records its larger 34 amino acid form, while shorter forms such as gastrin-17 are also widely referenced in physiology research.

Overview

Mammalian protein found in Homo sapiens

Gastrin is a peptide hormone that stimulates secretion of gastric acid (HCl) by the parietal cells of the stomach and aids in gastric motility. It is released by G cells in the pyloric antrum of the stomach, duodenum, and the pancreas.

Mechanism of Action

Gastrin prompts tissue in the stomach mucosa to make and release hydrochloric acid, and it signals the pancreas to release digestive enzymes. It also encourages smooth muscle contraction and raises blood flow and water movement in the stomach and intestine. Its receptor, CCKBR, is the same receptor used by cholecystokinin.

Research History

Gastrin entered physiology as the hormone signal linking food intake to acid release in the stomach. Research since then has followed its forms of different lengths, its receptor CCKBR, and its appearances outside the stomach, including in developmental biology.
