Also known as: growth differentiation factor 11, BMP-11
Growth differentiation factor 11, or GDF11, is a secreted member of the TGF beta family, also cataloged as BMP-11. Its mature human chain runs 109 amino acids. Researchers study it in body pattern formation during development and in questions about tissue aging.

Protein-coding gene in humans
Growth differentiation factor 11 (GDF11), also known as bone morphogenetic protein 11 (BMP-11), is a protein that in humans is encoded by the growth differentiation factor 11 gene. GDF11 is a member of the Transforming growth factor beta family.
GDF11 signals through activin type 2 receptors, ACVR2A and ACVR2B, working with type 1 receptors including ACVR1B, ACVR1C, and TGFBR1. This receptor activity leads to phosphorylation of SMAD2 and SMAD3 inside the cell. Through this pathway it helps pattern mesodermal and neural tissues and supports normal vertebral and facial development.
GDF11 was characterized as a developmental signal that helps set the front to back pattern of the body as tissues form. It later attracted wide attention in aging research, where its family resemblance to myostatin made its separate roles a subject of active study.
