Glucagon

Also known as: pancreatic glucagon, GCG

Glucagon is a pancreatic peptide of 29 amino acids, cataloged in research records under the gene symbol GCG. It is investigated as the counterregulatory partner of insulin in work on glucose homeostasis. Protein records place its molecular mass at about 3,483 daltons and describe a central role in blood sugar regulation. Recent attention also reaches into wider metabolic signaling and combination agonist concepts built around the glucagon family.

Overview

Peptide hormone

Glucagon is a peptide hormone, produced by alpha cells of the pancreas. It raises the concentration of glucose and fatty acids in the bloodstream and is considered to be the main catabolic hormone of the body. It is also used as a medication to treat a number of health conditions. Its effect is opposite to that of insulin, which lowers extracellular glucose. It is produced from proglucagon, encoded by the GCG gene.

Mechanism of Action

Glucagon engages its receptor GCGR on target cells, and the receptor works through a stimulatory G protein to lift intracellular cyclic AMP levels. The resulting signaling favors building new glucose through gluconeogenesis while slowing glucose breakdown through glycolysis. Through this route the peptide counterbalances insulin when blood glucose falls, a relationship that anchors much of the published work on it.

Research History

Glucagon entered the research record as a pancreatic factor defined by its capacity to raise circulating glucose, acting in the opposite direction to insulin. Characterization work over time documented its short sequence, its dedicated receptor, and its place in feedback control of glucose. The field has since widened toward glucagon family signaling as a whole, including glucagon like peptide 1 pathways examined in metabolic and surgical research settings.
