Also known as: igf1, somatomedin C, insulin-like growth factor 1, insulin like growth factor 1, IGF1
Insulin like growth factor 1, also recorded as somatomedin C and IGF1, is a small growth factor recovered from plasma that shares structural features with insulin. The mature human form spans 70 amino acids in protein records. It is researched in growth signaling, glucose handling in bone cells, and nervous system development. Its activity is closely tied to its binding proteins and to its dedicated receptor.

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), also called somatomedin C, is a hormone similar in molecular structure to insulin which plays an important role in childhood growth, and has anabolic effects in adults. In the 1950s IGF1 was called "sulfation factor" because it stimulated sulfation of cartilage in vitro, and in the 1970s due to its effects it was termed "nonsuppressible insulin-like activity" (NSILA).
IGF-1 binds the alpha subunit of its receptor IGF1R, which switches on the receptor tyrosine kinase and drives autophosphorylation in the beta subunit. That activation feeds into PI3K AKT and Ras MAPK signaling cascades inside the cell. Contact with selected integrins, and formation of a joint complex involving integrins and the receptor, are also recorded as necessary elements of complete signaling.
IGF-1 was characterized from plasma as part of a family of insulin related growth factors. Records from many species show a highly conserved sequence, which made the molecule a recurring subject in comparative endocrinology. Attention later broadened beyond growth promotion into synapse maturation, smell perception pathways, and biomarker work within neurology cohorts.
