Neuropeptide Y

Also known as: NPY, npy peptide, neuropeptide-Y, neuropeptide tyrosine

Neuropeptide Y, or NPY, is a 36 amino acid signaling peptide abundant in the brain. It is studied in connection with eating behavior, gut secretion control, and stress related brain circuits. UniProt lists its human form under accession P01303 with a mass near 4272.66 daltons.

Overview

Mammalian protein found in Homo sapiens

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a 36-amino acid neuropeptide that is involved in various physiological and homeostatic processes in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. It is secreted alongside other neurotransmitters such as GABA and glutamate.

Mechanism of Action

NPY binds mainly to the Y1 and Y2 receptors, which are G protein coupled receptors that lower cyclic AMP production inside target cells. Receptor activation can also raise intracellular calcium levels. Through these pathways NPY influences food intake signals and helps set antisecretory tone and contractility in the colon.

Research History

NPY takes its name from its tyrosine rich makeup, reflected in its alias neuropeptide tyrosine. It became a central molecule in appetite research after work showed it acts as a strong stimulator of food intake through its brain receptors.
