Also known as: hypocretin-1, hypocretin 1, orexin-A, HCRT1
Orexin A, also known as hypocretin-1, is a 33 amino acid neuropeptide made by a small cluster of neurons in the hypothalamus. It is studied in sleep and energy research for its role in maintaining wakefulness and coordinating appetite and metabolic balance.

Stimulating neuropeptide
Orexin-A, also known as hypocretin-1, is a naturally occurring neuropeptide and orexin isoform. The orexinergic nucleus in the lateral hypothalamus is the primary orexin projection system in the brain.
Orexin A binds the orexin receptors OX1R and OX2R with high affinity. Through these receptors it supports wakefulness and stimulates food intake in research models, and it can modulate pituitary luteinizing hormone secretion depending on ovarian steroid status.
Orexin A is cataloged under two naming traditions, orexin and hypocretin, both of which remain in use. Its precursor protein is cut to release the active peptide, and research has linked it to food intake, sleep and wakefulness, energy metabolism, autonomic function, and hormonal balance.
