Also known as: bone gla protein, BGP, osteocalcin hormone
Osteocalcin, also called bone Gla protein, is a 49 amino acid protein made by bone forming cells. It is one of the main organic components of bone matrix, and its uncarboxylated form is studied as a hormone that links bone to energy metabolism and brain development.

Mammalian protein found in humans
Osteocalcin, also known as bone gamma-carboxyglutamic acid-containing protein (BGLAP), is a small (49-amino-acid) noncollagenous protein hormone found in bone and dentin, first identified as a calcium-binding protein.
After gamma-carboxylation, osteocalcin binds strongly to apatite and calcium in bone and helps limit bone formation without blocking resorption or mineralization. The uncarboxylated form acts through receptors including GPRC6A in the testes and GPR158 in the brain, where signaling is linked to testosterone synthesis enzymes, monoamine neurotransmitter production, and protection of hippocampal neurons in research models.
Osteocalcin was first studied as a structural bone protein that binds calcium and apatite after gamma-carboxylation. Research later expanded when the uncarboxylated form was found to act like a hormone, with reported roles in insulin handling, testosterone production, and fetal and adult brain function.
