Also known as: pitocin, syntocinon, bonding hormone
Oxytocin is a nine amino acid peptide produced from a larger precursor that also yields its carrier, neurophysin 1. It leaves the posterior pituitary for both brain and blood compartments and is studied around social behavior, stress responses, and reproductive physiology. Work on it spans central circuits and peripheral tissues.

Peptide hormone and neuropeptide
Oxytocin is a peptide hormone and neuropeptide normally produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary. Present in animals since early stages of evolution, in humans it plays roles in behavior that include social bonding, love, reproduction, childbirth, and the period after childbirth. Oxytocin is released into the bloodstream as a hormone in response to sexual activity and during childbirth. It is also available in pharmaceutical form. In either form, oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions to speed up the process of childbirth.
Oxytocin signals after attaching to its receptor, OXTR, altering ion channel activity and both excitatory and inhibitory synaptic communication. Release inside the brain is associated in research with maternal care and affiliative patterns, while release into blood is associated with contraction of uterine and mammary smooth muscle. Studies also examine its relationship to bone forming osteoblast cells.
Early characterization focused on peripheral actions tied to childbirth and milk release. Research later widened to brain systems involved in caregiving, social recognition, affiliation, and reactions to stressful cues. That broader view made oxytocin a recurring subject in work on social cognition and fear related memory.
