Also known as: PYY, pyy 3-36, pyy3-36, peptide YY 3-36, PYY 3-36
Peptide YY, or PYY, is a 36 amino acid gut hormone released after meals, recorded in UniProt under accession P10082. A shortened form, PYY 3-36, is the version most discussed in appetite research. The full peptide has a recorded mass near 4409.87 daltons.

Peptide released from cells in the ileum and colon in response to feeding
Peptide YY (PYY), also known as peptide tyrosine tyrosine, is a peptide that in humans is encoded by the PYY gene. Peptide YY is a short peptide released from cells in the ileum and colon in response to feeding. In the blood, gut, and other elements of periphery, PYY acts to reduce appetite; similarly, when injected directly into the central nervous system, PYY is also anorexigenic, i.e., it reduces appetite.
PYY binds the neuropeptide Y receptors NPY1R and NPY2R, and also NPY5R. These receptors lower cyclic AMP production and raise intracellular calcium. Through NPY2R on hypothalamic circuits, PYY 3-36 is linked to reduced appetite and food intake, and in the gut the peptide restrains pancreatic secretion and helps set colonic antisecretory tone and contractility.
PYY is named for its two signature tyrosine residues, reflected in its longer name, peptide tyrosine tyrosine. It belongs to the same peptide family as neuropeptide Y and is produced in the intestine, with the 3-36 form arising when the first two residues are trimmed away.
