Also known as: SP peptide, undecapeptide substance p, SP, neuropeptide P, undecapeptide
Substance P is an 11 amino acid neuropeptide in the tachykinin family, released from the endings of sensory nerves. It is studied in pain and inflammation research for its role in neurogenic inflammation, blood vessel dilation, and smooth muscle responses.

Chemical compound (polypeptide neurotransmitter)
Substance P (SP) is a neuropeptide, belonging to the tachykinin family of neuropeptides that acts as a neurotransmitter and a neuromodulator. Substance P and the closely related neurokinin A (NKA) are produced from a polyprotein precursor after alternative splicing of the preprotachykinin A gene. It is an undecapeptide and has the following sequence:Arg Pro Lys Pro Gln Gln Phe Phe Gly Leu Met (RPKPQQFFGLM)
Substance P is a ligand for the TACR1 receptor, where it triggers phospholipase C signaling and can also raise cyclic AMP through adenylate cyclase activation. It additionally acts on TACR2, shows weaker activity at TACR3, and activates the mast cell receptor MRGPRX2, a pathway tied to neurogenic inflammation and pain signaling.
Substance P is produced from the protachykinin-1 precursor and is released from specific sensory nerve terminals. Research on it has centered on pain signaling and neurogenic inflammation, including its actions on mast cells and immune cell recruitment.
