Also known as: vasoactive intestinal peptide, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide, vip peptide
Vasoactive intestinal peptide, or VIP, is a 28 amino acid neuropeptide found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. It is studied for its roles in blood vessel dilation, immune modulation, and protection of nerve tissue.

Person with privileges due to their status
A very important person or personage is a person who is accorded special privileges due to their high social rank, status, influence, or importance. The term was not common until sometime after World War II when it was popularised by Royal Air Force pilots.
VIP signals through VIP receptor 1 and VIP receptor 2, members of the PACAP subfamily of class B1 G protein coupled receptors. Its documented actions include vasodilation with lower arterial pressure, increased heart muscle contractility, glycogen breakdown, and relaxation of smooth muscle in the airways, stomach, and gallbladder, along with neuroprotective and immune modulatory roles in the nervous system.
VIP was named for its strong vessel dilating activity, and later mapping showed it is produced widely in the brain and peripheral nerves. Research has since followed its two receptors into immune modulation and neuroprotection studies, reflecting its broad distribution.
