1What Is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide that mimics GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone the gut naturally releases after eating to signal the pancreas to release insulin and tell the brain you're full. It was developed by Novo Nordisk and is FDA-approved under the brand names Ozempic (for type 2 diabetes) and Wegovy (for weight management). Research-grade semaglutide is sold exclusively for in-vitro laboratory research - not for human or animal use.
3How It Works
After a meal, your gut releases GLP-1 to coordinate the body's blood sugar response. Semaglutide is a modified version of this hormone that lasts much longer in the body (about 7 days, compared to natural GLP-1 which degrades in minutes). It binds to GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas (stimulating insulin release), the brain (reducing appetite), and the gut (slowing stomach emptying). In people with type 2 diabetes and obesity, this combination lowers blood sugar and reduces caloric intake.
4What Researchers Have Observed
These findings are from pre-clinical and early-phase research. Results in human subjects have not been established.
