FDA Approves Wegovy Pill, First Oral GLP-1 Peptide for Obesity
On December 22, 2025, the FDA approved the Wegovy pill - a once-daily 25 mg oral semaglutide tablet - for chronic weight management, making it the first oral GLP-1 peptide medicine approved for obesity in the United States.
The approval extends Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide franchise, which already included Ozempic (type 2 diabetes), Rybelsus (oral, type 2 diabetes), and injectable Wegovy (weight management). Each approval is product- and indication-specific: the same molecule carries different labels depending on formulation and dose.
For peptide researchers, the milestone is scientific as much as commercial. Oral delivery of peptides was long considered impractical; the Wegovy pill demonstrates that absorption-enhancer formulations can carry a peptide through full FDA review for a mass-market indication.
The agency’s decision does not extend to compounded semaglutide or any research-grade material - a distinction the FDA has enforced consistently across the GLP-1 category.
